From 1 July 1991 the Soil Conservation Service [I] was abolished and its functions were integrated with the former Department of Lands within the Department of Conservation and Land Management. (1)
On 25 May 1993, the Minister for Land and Water Conservation was appointed, and re-established the Soil Conservation Service [II] as a separate organisation and division within the department that administered to the Soil Conservation Act 1938 (Act No. 10, 1938) and the Soil Conservation Commissioner. (2)
At the abolition of the Department of Conservation and Land Management on 6 April 1995 the Soil Conservation Service was transferred to the newly established Department of Land and Water Conservation. (3)
The Soil Conservation Service was renamed to Soil Services Unit in 1997 as part of a business and organisational structure realignment. (4)
On 2 April 2003 The Soil Services Unit was transferred to the Department of Lands [III] and was known as the Soil Services Division. The Soil Services division was a specialist conservation earthmoving and soil consultancy business, specialising in the planning, design and construction of soil and water conservation earthworks; and the planning and implementing of practical and realistic solutions to common land degradation problems. Through its plant hire scheme Soilworks, the Soil Conservation Service offered a earthmoving service to design and implement soil and water conservation earthworks. (5)
The Soil Services Division was again renamed as Soil Conservation Service [III] in 2004. (6)
From 1 July 2009 the Department of Lands [III] was abolished and the Soil Conservation Service was transferred to the newly established Land and Property Management Authority, a division of the Department of Services, Technology and Administration. (7)
The Land and Property Management Authority was abolished on 4 April 2011 and the Soil Conservation Service [III] became a division of Department of Primary Industries within the Department of Trade & Investment, Regional Infrastructure & Services. (8) From 1 July 2011 the Department of Primary Industries [II] was abolished and re-established as Department of Primary Industries [III], a Departmental Office within the Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services. (9) On 1 July 2015 the Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services was abolished and its functions were transferred to the Department of Industry, Skills and Regional Development. (10)
From 1 April 2017, the name of the Department of Industry, Skills and Regional Development was renamed to the Department of Industry. The Soil Conservation Service was aligned within the Lands and Forestry division of that department. (11)
The Staff of the Soil Conservation Service were transferred by Administrative Order into Local Land Services on 1 October 2017. (12)
On 1 July 2019 the Department of Industry was abolished and the Soil Conservation Service [III] was moved to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. (13)
From 1 July 2022 the persons employed in the Local Land Services who were principally involved in the administration of the Soil Conservation Act 1938 were transferred to the Department of Regional NSW. The Soil Conservation Service was moved into the Commercial division of that department. (14)
In 2023 the Soil Conservation Service joined the Regional Precincts Group within the Department of Regional NSW. (15)
