Full description

The Municipalities Act of 1867 provided for the constitution of a Municipality if fifty or more residents petitioned the Governor requesting one to be established. A petition of 89 residents for a Municipality of Camden was received, and the Municipality was proclaimed in the NSW Government Gazette of 6 February 1889. (1)

The Valuation of Land Act, 1916, was applied to the area on 1 July 1926 and the first Valuation List was supplied on 25 January 1927. (2)

In 1949, the Municipality consisted of two Wards, the First Ward being the Municipality of Camden and the Second Ward being the “C” Riding of the Shire of Nepean, which had been dissolved by the Local Government (Areas) Act, 1948. (3)

On 31 March 1978, under the proclamation of the Local Government Act, 1919, the Municipality of Camden was divided into three Wards: the North Ward, the Central Ward, and the South Ward. (4)

The Municipality of Camden became Camden Council on 1 July 1993. Under s.221(1) of the Local Government Act 1993 (Act No.30, 1993) the corporate name of all councils were changed by deleting any reference to 'municipality' or 'shire'. However, this was opposed by some local government areas. The Local Government Legislation (Miscellaneous Amendments) Act 1994 (Act No.44, 1994) enabled local government areas to retain the words 'municipality' or 'shire' as part of their corporate name if they resolved to do so before 31 December 1994. In 1998, the three parcels of land were transferred from the Wollondilly Shire Council area to the Camden Council area, and one from Camden to Wollondilly. (6)
