Full description

The Municipal District of Burwood was proclaimed on 27 March 1874. (1)

It was formed under the Municipalities Act 1867 (31 Vic. Act No.12) which provided for the subdivision of existing municipalities into boroughs and districts as well as the constitution of new municipalities. (2)

The District boundary encompassed the junction of Liverpool and Redmire Roads to Parramatta Road, the western boundary of the Borough of Ashfield, and southwards to Liverpool Road. (3)

In 1884 additional land was passed from the Municipal District of Burwood to the Municipal District of Concord. (4)

The Municipal District of Burwood became the Municipality of Burwood on 31 December 1906. Under the Local Government Extension Act, 1906 (Act No.40, 1906) the terms ‘municipal district’ and ‘borough’ ceased to be used. (5)

Boundary exchanges occurred between Concord and the Municipality of Burwood on 10 February 1922 and 6 September 1929. (6)

In 1948 the Central and East wards of the Municipality of Enfield merged with Burwood Council under the Local Government (Areas) Act (Act No.30, 1948). (7)

On 1 July 1993, under the Local Government Act 1993 (Act No.30, 1993) the corporate names of all councils were changed to ‘council’ from 'municipality' or 'shire'. This resulted in Burwood Municipal Council becoming Burwood Council. (8)

In January 2016 the Minister for Local Government referred a proposal to amalgamate several councils, including the merger of Burwood Council with Strathfield, Ashfield, Canada Bay, Leichhardt and Marrickville Councils, to the Office of Local Government as a function of reviewing the Local Government Act 1993 (Act No.70, 1993). (9) This proposal resulted in the amalgamation of Ashfield, Marrickville and Leichhardt Councils but Burwood remained independent.

In March 2022, Council implemented a new organisational structure designed to improve efficiency and better outcomes for the community. As part of the new structure, a role was created which focused on business improvement. This role was responsible for undertaking service reviews across the organisation to enhance business processes and encourage business excellence. (10)
