Full description

The Ministry for Police and Emergency Services [II] was established on 4 April 2011 by the Public Sector Employment and Management (Departments) Order 2011. The Ministry reported to the Minister for Police and Emergency Services. (1) The Ministry was a division of the Principal Department, the Department of Attorney General and Justice [II]. (2)

From 4 April 2011 the groups of staff in the Department of Premier and Cabinet comprising the Security and Recovery Co-ordination Branch and the Law Enforcement Policy Branch were removed from that department and added to the Ministry for Police and Emergency Services. (3) Emergency Management NSW was removed from the Department of Rural Fire Service and added to the Ministry for Police and Emergency Services. (4) Also the group of staff in the Department of Human Services who were principally involved in the provision of disaster welfare assistance were removed from that department and added to the Ministry for Police and Emergency Services. (5) Further the Ministerial Liaison Unit was removed from the NSW Police Force and added to the Ministry for Police and Emergency Services. (6)

On 24 February 2014 the Public Sector Employment and Management Act 2002 (Act No.43, 2002) was replaced by the Government Sector Employment Act 2013 (Act No. 40, 2013). Under the Constitution Act 1902 (Act No.32, 1902) the Administrative Arrangements Order 2014 was issued to commence on 24 February 2014. The Order abolished all principal departments under the former act however they were re-established with the same name as Departments under Schedule 1 of the Government Sector Employment Act. For all purposes the re-established Department of Attorney General and Justice was the successor and a continuation of the former principal Department. (7)

On 23 April 2014 when the name of the Department of Attorney General and Justice was changed to the Department of Police and Justice the Ministry for Police and Emergency Services contingued to report to that Department. (8) On 1 July 2014 when the name of the Department of Police and Justice was changed to the Department of Justice the Ministry for Police and Emergency Services continued to report to that Department. (9)

On 1 July 2015 the Ministry for Police and Emergency Services was abolished and its staff were transferred to the Department of Justice. (10)
