Full description
By 30 June 1913 the branches of the Department of Public Works were again reorganised 'with a view to economising space and saving time in transmission of instructions, papers, messages, &c. from room to room'. (1) Following the appointment of Mr H.H. Dare, Chief Engineer for Harbours, National Works and Drainage as Chief Engineer to the Commissioner of the Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission (Mr L.A.B. Wade, formerly Chief Engineer for Irrigation) the work of his branch was split. National and Local Government Works were separated from the Harbours and Drainage Branch. (2)The responsibilities of the Harbours and Drainage Branch included drainage work, harbours and rivers and the Dredge Service. (3)
At the end of February 1926 the National and Local Government Works and the Harbours and Drainage Branches of the Department of Public Works were amalgamated with the new branch being known as the Harbours, Roads, and Bridges Branch. (4)
