The Colonial Treasurer was first given power to lease public wharves and to issue licences for the use of jetties under the Navigation Act further Amendment Act of 1879 (43 Vic. no.13, assented to 18 December 1879). (1) A separate department under the Treasurer's ministerial control for this purpose was set up in 1887 (2) although Public Wharves was first listed in the Public Service Lists of New South Wales (Blue Books) in 1886. (3) This Department was known as the Public Wharves Department until 1901 when it became the Public Wharves and Resumed Properties Department. (4)
The Public Wharves and Resumed Properties Department is listed in the Public Service Lists under the Department of Public Works from 1902. In 1904, ministerial control reverted to the Treasurer when Public Wharves was dropped from the title and the Department became known as the Resumed Properties Department. (5)
