Full description

The Public Wharves and Resumed Properties Department has been a branch in the Department of Public Works. From 9 October 1903 the Resumed Properties Office was transferred from the Department of Public Works to become a branch of The Treasury. (1)

The work of the Resumed Properties Department appears to have involved receipt of rents from Crown tenancies; administration of Crown properties; collection of payments related to permissive occupations in State Forests; payment of rates for government buildings in local government areas; accommodation of government departments (including advising on records storage); Sydney Harbour Bridge resumptions; Darling Harbour resumptions; and, demotion sales. (2) 

The various Acts relating to the Sydney Harbour Trust which were previously the responsibility of the Colonial Treasurer, many of which related to resumptions for public works, were allocated to the Secretary for Public Works from 6 September 1935. (3) In consequence the Resumed Properties Department then became a branch of the Department of Public Works. (4)

From 1 February 1936 when the Department of Public Works and the Department of Local Governments were amalgamated the Resumed Properties Department became a branch of the Department of Works and Local Government. (5)

The Resumed Properties Department was deleted from Public Works on 24 June 1938. (6)
