Full description
The Metropolitan Reception Prison was declared a prison by a proclamation in 1967. (1) It was one of three new prisons established - by the same proclamation - within the grounds of the former State Penitentiary. The others were the Metropolitan Remand Centre and the Central Industrial Prison. (2)
The name of this prison was changed to the Assessment Prison, Long Bay Correctional Centre by a proclamation in 1989. (3) In 1993 the Assessment Prison was de-proclaimed. (4)
By another proclamation in the same issue of the Gazette, most of the area of the now former Assessment Prison was immediately re-established as a prison to be known as the Reception and Industrial Centre. (5) Most males convicted in the metropolitan area were assessed here before being allocated to an appropriate prison. Short sentence prisoners usually remained at Long Bay, while those with longer sentences were often transferred to country prisons. (6)
