Full description
The prison at Parramatta was re-established in its previous premises on 14 July 1922 at Parramatta Gaol [II] (1) On 19 July 1922 part of Parramatta Gaol was declared to be set apart for use of a Lock Hospital. (2)
Over a period of five years the fabric of the prison was refurbished. The prison evolved into the state's major industrial prison until the outbreak of World War II, with inmates working particularly in the fields of tailoring, bookmaking and carpentry, tin smithing and bakery (3) By 1992 the name of the prison was changed to Parramatta Correctional Centre. (4)
The Parramatta Correctional Centre closed as an institution for the reception and detention of prisoners on 3 September 1997, and its proclamation as a prison was withdrawn on 16 September 1998. (5)
The Parramatta Correctional Centre was re-established as a correctional centre on 2 December 1998. (6) Changes to the boundary of the Centre occurred on 8 December 1999. (7)
The area of the Correctional Centre was varied on 13 June 2003, 1 July 2005 and 24 July 2009. (8)
An unprecedented drop in the inmate population resulted in the closure of some prisons from 2011 including the 169-year-old Parramatta prison in December 2011. Parramatta Correctional Centre was partially closed in September 2011 when three of its six wings were shut and of the 200 inmates that were housed at the Centre (which had the capacity to hold 580 inmates) were relocated to vacant beds at the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre, Silverwater, Long Bay, Parklea, Bathurst and the South Coast Correctional Centre. (9)
Parramatta Correctional Centre was officially revoked as a correctional centre on 10 February 2012. (10)
