Full description

In 1975 administration of Justices of the Peace was transferred from the Chief Secretary to the Attorney General. The main role of the branch was to process applications for appointment of Justices of the Peace and to provide information that would assist Justices of the Peace in carrying our their duties.

In 1975 applicants were required to be Australian citizens by birth, descent or naturalisation; to be between the ages of 18 and 70 years; to be an enrolled elector in New South Wales; to be of good character; and and not to be a discharged bankrupt. (1) The Justice of the Peace appears to have been administered as a section or discreet unit of the Ministerial Office immediately responsible via the Senior Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Under Secretary (Jusitice). (2) By 1987 the Justice of the Peace were administered witin the Secretariat Division (3) and by 1989 formed part of the Court Police Division. (4)

By 1990 the branch appears to have amalmated to become the Miscellaneous Claims and Justices of the Peace branch under the Assistant Director Legal and Policy. (5)
