Full description

The Stock Medicines Board was established by the Stock Foods and Medicine Act 1940 (Act No.19, 1940). (1) The Act was proclaimed on 25 November 1940. (2)

The Board was to consist of four members namely: the Chief Veterinary Surgeon (the Chairman), the Chief Chemist, and the Director of Veterinary Research from the Department of Agriculture. The fourth member of the board was to be a veterinary surgeon appointed by the Minister. (3)

The main function of the Board was to consider applications for the registration of stock medicines, and to recommend whether the registration of a particular stock medicine should be made. (4) The Board could also make recommendations on the cancellation of the registration of a particular stock medicine. The registration could be cancelled if the wholesale dealer of the medicine was convicted of an offence under s.19 (1) of the Stock Foods and Medicines Act. (5)

The first Meeting of the Board was held on 4 January 1941. The meeting was attended by Max Henry (Chairman) and the three members; Mr E.L. Griffith, W.L Hindmans, and T.S.P. Hebben. (6)

In 1989 the Board was reconstituted under the Stock Medicines Act 1989 (Act No.182, 1989). (7) The Board was to consist of six Members namely: the Chief of the Division of Animal Health, the Director of Chemistry, the Director of Animal Health Research, and the Registrar of Stock Medicine of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries; the Chief Pharmacist of the Department of Health. The sixth member of the board was to be a veterinary surgeon appointed by the Minister. (8) The functions of the Stock Medicines Board were not altered under the 1989 legislation.

The Board was abolished on 1 September 2005 under section 17 of the Stock Medicines Amendment Act 2004 (Act No. 89, 2004). (9)
