Full description

The inaugural meeting of the Council of Mitchell College of Advanced Education (MCAE) was convened on 29 January 1971. (1) The Council replaced the Interim Council as the governing body of the College on the 1 January 1971 when the College became a body corporate. (2)
To assist the Council in the discharge of its duties, the following Committees of Council were established;
- Building and Site Development Committee
- External Studies Committee
- By-Laws and Regulations Committee
- Finance Committee
- Union Management Committee
- Academic Committee
- Administrative Planning Committee
- Ceremonials Committee; and
- Standing Committee of Council. (3)
The membership of the Council initially comprised the following:
- the Principal
- the Assistant Principal
- three members elected by the staff of the College
- one member elected by the student body; and
- the remaining members (membership of the Council was limited to 15) appointed by the Minister for Education. (4)
However, by 1978 the composition of the Council had been amended to a total of 16 members including:
-two official members (the Principal and the Assistant Principal)
-two members elected by the academic staff
-one member elected by the non-academic staff
-two members elected by the student body; and
-two members elected by the other members of the Council. (5)
The Council continued to grow in size and by 1986 had grown to 24 members. At this time the Council met at least six times a year and was assisted by the following Committees;
-Finance and Planning Committee
-Personnel Committee
-Building and Site Development Committee
-Equal Opportunity Committee. (6)
The final meeting of the MCAE Council was held on 8 December 1989. The Charles Sturt University Act was enacted on 19 July 1989, bringing together the Mitchell College of Advanced Education and the Riverina-Murray Institute of Higher Education (RMIHE) to form Charles Sturt University (CSU). As such, in 1990 the MCAE Council was replaced by the CSU Interim Board of Governors. (7)
