In July, 1973, the Minister for Education appointed an Interim Council for the Newcastle Teachers’ College, to advise him and to undertake forward planning in advance of the impending transformation of the Teachers’ College into a College of Advanced Education. [1] The College was then given administrative independence, from the 1st July, 1974, by delegations of authority to the Interim Council to enable it to handle administrative matters which had previously been dealt with directly by the Department of Education. [2] The Interim Council met for the last time on the 9th September, 1974. [3] On the 1st October, the College was declared a corporate college under the Higher Education Act, 1969, with the name of the Newcastle College of Advanced Education, [4] and from that date both the Newcastle Teachers’ College and its Interim Council ceased to exist. [5] The last act of the Interim Council was formally to hand over its functions to its successor, the First Constituted Council of the Newcastle C.A.E., at the first meeting of the First Constituted Council, held on the 1st October, 1974, this being made possible by the circumstance that all members of the Interim Council had been appointed to membership of the First Constituted Council.
