The Interim Council of the University of Newcastle was constituted by Schedule 3, clause 1 of the University of Newcastle Act, 1989 (commencing 1st September, 1989)[1], to act as the governing body of the University until the permanent University Council created by section 9 of that Act was able to commence operation. The members of the Interim Council were as follows:
The Chancellor (if not otherwise a member of the Council)
The Vice Chancellor
The Presiding member of the Academic Senate (unless that person in the Vice Chancellor)
The Deputy presiding member of the Academic Senate (Unless that person is the Vice Chancellor)
The person who immediately before this Act was the principal of the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music (Newcastle Branch)
The person who immediately before this act was the Principal of the Hunter Institute of Higher Education
Up to 15 persons appointed by the Minister The duty of the Interim Council was to make the necessary by-laws and to ensure that a Council as prescribed in section 9 of the University of Newcastle Act, 1989 was in place within 12 months or any such extended time proclaimed in the NSW Government Gazette. The Interim Council met for the first time on 15th September, 1989, and held its final meeting on 24th August, 1990. The commencement date for section 9 of the Act, which was also the date for the supersession of the Interim Council, was 1st September, 1990[2].
