The Office of the Surveyor General was formed on 5 January 1911 when the offices of the Under Secretary for Lands and Chief Surveyor were separated, and the position of Surveyor General was restored. (1)
The Office of the Surveyor General later became an agency of the Department of Land and Water Conservation, and remained as such until it was abolished. (2)
The Office of the Surveyor General was abolished when it was merged with the Land Information Centre, another agency of the Department of Land and Water Conservation, to form the Surveyor General's Department on 2 January, 1998. (3)
