Full description

In September 1939 His Excellency the Governor with the advice of the Executive Council approved, as constituted, a State Council of Physical Fitness for New South Wales (1). During 1940 the Council of Physical Fitness became known as the National Fitness Council of New South Wales (2), as a result of the Commonwealth National Fitness Bill. It has the provision that the National Fitness Council in each State would be the active agency to implement a policy of activities in the interests of the National Fitness Campaign throughout the Commonwealth (3). The National Fitness Council of New South Wales was directly responsible to the Minister for Educations and operated in close conjunction with the Education Department (4). The Council's main function was to promote physical fitness in the general community and advise the Education Department on physical education in schools (5). The Council ceased meeting in 1969 (6).
