Full description

Homebush Abattoir Corporation was established by the Meat Industry (Further Amendment) Act, 1978 (Act No.150, 1978) assented to 29 December 1978. Homebush Abattoir Corporation was constituted to replace the Metropolitan Meat Industry Board II, and to conduct operations formerly carried out by the Board. (1) The Act specified that provisions regarding the establishment of Homebush Abattoir Corporation should commence on 1 January 1979. (2)

The Meat Industry (Further Amendment) Act 1978 (Act No.150, 1978), carried forward the responsibilities detailed in the Meat Act, 1915 (Act No.69, 1915):
* maintenance and control of abattoirs and slaughterhouses, saleyards and markets within the County of Cumberland,
* provision for the selling, exporting, or otherwise dealing with products derived from abattoir operations, and
* the right to regulate entry into the Sydney region of all meat slaughtered elsewhere. (3)

The Governor was empowered to appoint persons to be the Homebush Abattoir Corporation's General Manager, and Deputy General Manager (4), and the Minister could at any time appoint an Acting General Manager as required. (5) Persons directly or indirectly associated with businesses involved in the sale or export of meat were exempt from these appointments. (6)

In the late 1980s, as part of microeconomic and financial reforms, a process of rationalisation, privatisation and corporatisation emerged in the public sector. The Homebush Abattoir Corporation was one of a number of trading enterprises affected, with slaughtering operations ceasing at the Homebush Abattoir in 1988. (7)

The Homebush Abattoir Corporation (Dissolution and Transfer) Act, 1991 (Act No.45, 1991), dissolved the Corporation and transferred its assets and liabilities to the Homebush Bay Ministerial Corporation. (8)
