Full description

The Egg Marketing Board was established in 1928 under the provisions of the Marketing of Primary Products Act, (Act No.34, 1927), which was assented to 25 March 1927. (1) This was an Act to promote primary production by the formation of Marketing Boards representing producers and consumers of products. It conferred upon Marketing Boards powers with respect to marketing the products and making certain levies on the producers. (2) Under this Act producers of primary commodities could ask for polls to be conducted to determine whether a system of producer controlled marketing should be instituted and Marketing Boards set up if the majority of producers so desired. (3) Eggs were declared a commodity within the counties of Cumberland and Northumberland, and the shires of Nattai and Wollondilly on 18 July 1928. (4) In October 1928 a poll was taken to elect three producer members. (5) The Board's responsibilities were to receive and dispose of all eggs produced in the State with the exception of those sold direct to shops or consumed by farmers designated as Producer Agents. In addition to marketing responsibilities the Board had objectives to improve egg quality and increase operational activity. Thus the Board's activities included the research and testing of new equipment and packaging, research and development of new products, the registration and inspection of producers' farms and produce, and the export of egg products. From 1964 the membership of the Board consisted of five producers elected by egg producers and two persons appointed by the Minister. (6) On 1 July 1983, under the terms of the Egg Industry Act (Act No. 57, 1983), the New South Wales Egg Corporation was formed to take over the operations of the Egg Marketing Board. Endnotes
