Full description
The Municipality of Marrickville [III] (1949-1993) Marrickville Council (1993- ) was a local body in the county of Cumberland constituted under the Local Government (Areas) Act 1948 (Act No.30 1948) and subsequent legislation.
On 1 January 1949 the municipalities of Marrickville, St.Peters and Petersham were dissolved, and reconstituted as the new Municipality of Marrickville. (1) The North, South, East and West wards of the previous Marrickville became the First, Second, Third and Fourth wards respectively of the new entity. Of Petersham, the Lewisham ward became the Fifth ward, South Kingston became the Sixth ward, Sydenham became the Ninth ward, and Annandale became the Tenth ward. Of St.Peters, North and Brompton wards became the Seventh ward, and Bellevue and Tempe became the Eighth ward. Each ward returned two aldermen, except the Seventh and Eighth returning three, for a total of 22. (2) This ward arrangement was simplified in 1950, with a reduction to seven wards and 14 aldermen, as of the next election. (3) The new wards were Stanmore, Petersham, Dulwich Hill, Riverside, Henson, East Marrickville and St.Peters. (4)
The Local Government (City of Sydney Boundaries) Act, 1967 (Act No.48, 1967) transferred 423 acres from the City of Sydney to Marrickville (5), comprising the ward of Enmore, which came into effect on 1 August 1968. (6) Two additional aldermen for the new area were to be appointed by the Boundaries Commission to serve until the next election, and the official size of the council was increased to 16. (7) The Act included an updated definition of the boundaries of Marrickville. (8) The municipality was required to submit revised proposals for ward divisions within 12 months of the Act. (9)
Under s.221(1) of the Local Government Act 1993 (Act No.30, 1993) the term Municipality was no longer used in names of local government areas. As a result, the Municipality of Marrickville became the local government area of Marrickville on 1 July 1993. Also under this Act, aldermen became councillors. (10)
In 2015 Marrickville Council governed four wards represented by 12 councillors: West Ward - Burraga; Central Ward - Wirriga; North Ward - Wali; and South Ward - Magura. (11)
On 12 May 2016 Marrickville Council was dissolved when it was amalgamated with Leichhardt Council and Ashfield Council to form Inner West Council. (12)
