Dr Zhonghua Sun gained his M.B and PhD degrees in clinical medicine and medical imaging, respectively, from Harbin Medical University in China and University of Ulster, UK. He worked as a radiologist in the department of radiology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital for 9 years prior to taking up one-year medical fellowship during 1998-1999 in Japan. He was awarded a Vice Chancellor Research Scholarship in 1999 at University of Ulster, where he completed his PhD in 2002. He worked and lectured for two and a half years in medical imaging at University of Ulster before joining Curtin in May 2005.

Dr Sun has published more than 60 archival research papers, most of them in well regarded journals with a good impact factor. Dr Sun has significantly contributed to quality research in the medical imaging profession. He is collaborating with a wide variety of people both within and external to his personal research field. Dr Sun is also collaborating internationally which is opening up further opportunities for him and his research.

Dr Sun's research interest include:

  • Diagnostic radiology, medical image processing, visualization and analysis
  • Radiation dose and image quality (CR/DR, CT imaging)
  • 3D imaging of abdominal aortic aneurysm and endovascular stent grafts
  • 3D imaging of coronary artery disease and coronary stents
  • Haemodynamic analysis of cardiovascular diseases
  • Virtual reality and simulation in cardiovascular diseases
