Small hive beetles were maintained under controlled temperature, humidity and light conditions. Volatile compounds produced by Kodamaea ohmeri were extracted and identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), from which seven compounds were selected for behavioural testing based on their availability. Adult female beetles were individually tested in two-choice Y-tube assays, where each compound was presented on filter paper against its corresponding solvent control. Beetle location was recorded at 40, 80 and 120 minutes, with 12 independent beetles tested per compound and no beetle re-used. The two most attractive compounds, hexadecane and 2,2,4-trimethylhexane, were subsequently evaluated in field trials using oil traps placed inside 20 honeybee hives, with treatment and solvent-control traps positioned side-by-side for 48 hours.
