Full description

On 1 January 1947, two new Shires, Gosford and Wyong, were created from the former Municipality of Gosford and the former Shires of Erina and Woy Woy. (1)

Wyong Shire consisted of approximately 302 square miles of land and was divided into three Ridings (A, B, and C) when established in 1947. (2)

A Provisional Council was appointed on 20 December 1946 to continue Council business and to prepare for the new Wyong Shire Council. This included the apportionment of assets, rights and liabilities and the provision of an office for Council, and for transferring Council staff. Staff of the former Shire of Erina were to be transferred to the Council of the Shire of Wyong. (3)

The members of Wyong's Provisional Council were: Frank Balance, Edward Braithwaite, and Thomas Pearce for Riding A; Wilfred Barrett, Robert Brownlee, and Albert Taylor for Riding B; James Cable, Andrew McElhone, and James Seargent for Riding C. (4)

The Brisbane Water County Council had been established in 1942 by the former Gosford Municipality and the Shires of Erina and Woy Woy to provide electricity in their areas. When Wyong Shire and the reconstituted Gosford Municipality were established in 1947 they assumed responsibility for the Brisbane Water County Council. The County Council's constitution was altered to consist of three representatives each from Wyong and Gosford Shires, although the boundaries of the County Council remained substantially unchanged. (5) On 23 December 1949 part of Wyong Shire was transferred to Gosford Shire and part of Gosford Shire was transferred to Wyong Shire. (6)

In 2003, Wyong Shire covered an area of 827 square kilometres and was located between the Pacific Ocean in the east, the local government area of the City of Lake Macquarie in the north, the local government area of Gosford City in the south and the City of Cessnock in the west. (7) There were ten councillors, five for each ward. (8)

On 12 May 2016 the City of Gosford and Wyong Shire Councils were amalgamated to form the Central Coast Council. (9)
