Significance

William Hudson Shaw, Qantas Airlines executive and aviation historian, was born in 1910. Shaw has had a long association with the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences dating from the late 1950s. He played a major role in securing the return to Australia of Lawrence Hargrave's models from the Deutsches Museum, Munich in 1960 and of Hargrave's journals and drawings (P3321) from the Royal Aeronautical Society, London in 1963. Over the years 1965 to 1971 he compiled an index to Hargrave's journals and New Guinea diaries and a schedule of his drawings (see Volume 2 of the Guide to P3321). Shaw was made an Honorary Associate of the Museum in 1977. He is the author of Lawrence Hargrave: explorer, inventor and aviation experimenter, with Olaf Ruhen (published in 1977) and also of numerous articles on Hargrave. The archive includes a collection of photographs of and relating to Hargrave and his flying machines, as well as a manuscript of Shaw's biography of Hargrave, and research and reference material. This archive is an important complement to the other two significant Lawrence Hargrave collections held by the Powerhouse.
