West Sale State School (School No. 4648) (VA 5413) opened in January 1950 as a co-educational primary school. The school operated within a Commonwealth Migrant Centre, also known as the Immigration Holding Centre at West Sale, which was established after World War II on the site of the West Sale aerodrome to accommodate post-war migrants and displaced persons.The school was conducted in repurposed army huts and a large tent, providing education for between 70 and 100 students over its two and a half years of operation. Evening classes were also held for adults, which ceased after approximately two years as many participants transitioned into employment.
In 1951, three rooms were destroyed by fire. These may have been rebuilt by the Commonwealth Government; however, further details about the buildings are subject to additional research.
The Commonwealth closed the West Sale Migrant Centre in July 1953, and West Sale State School was permanently closed at the same time.
