West Maitland Court of Petty Sessions in the county of Northumberland was created on 11 August 1840 under the provisions of s.17 of the Offenders Punishment and Justices Summary Jurisdiction Act of 1832 (3 Wil.IV No.3). (1) 

This Court was known as West Maitland Court of Petty Session from establishment until 14 August 1953 from when it was known as Maitland Court of Petty Sessions. (2)

The records of the Paterson Court of Petty Sessions were transferred to the Maitland Court of Petty Sessions on 2 October 1967, when the Paterson Court of Petty Sessions was abolished. (3)

The records of the Branxton Court of Petty Sessions were transferred to the Maitland Court of Petty Sessions on 30 June 1969, when the Branxton Court of Petty Sessions was abolished. (4)

The records of the East Gresford Court of Petty Sessions were transferred to the Maitland Court of Petty Sessions on 31 July 1971, when the East Gresford Court of Petty Sessions was abolished. (5)

The Maitland Court of Petty Sessions was abolished on 31 December 1984 when the Local Courts Act 1982 abolished all Courts of Petty Sessions and replaced these with Local Courts. (6)
