Buoy data from the following organisations contribute to the National Wave Archive: Manly Hydraulics Laboratory (part of the NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DPE), which has assumed function of the former NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH)); Bureau of Meteorology; Western Australia Department of Transport (DOT); the Queensland Department of Environment and Science (DES); the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS); Gippsland Ports; the NSW Nearshore Wave Data Program from the NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DPE); the University of Western Australia (UWA); Deakin University, Pilbara Ports Authority and Flinders University and South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI). The data from MHL, BOM, DOT, DES, Gippsland Ports and Pilbara Ports Authority, is gathered by the Waverider system developed by the Dutch company, Datawell. Some older wave data were collected using non-directional Waverider buoys. As technology advanced and directional measuring capabilities were developed in wave buoys, wave buoy networks were gradually upgraded to directional Waverider buoys. Therefore, some older datasets do not have directional information whereas newer datasets have directional information. The data from IMOS, the NSW Nearshore Wave Data Program, DPE, UWA, Deakin, Flinders University and SARDI comes from Spotter Wave Buoys, developed by Sofar Ocean Technologies, which collect data similarly to the Waverider system. BOM, DES, DOT, MHL, IMOS (some) and Gippsland Ports - The wave buoy data is issued in GTS bulletins (which are only available for 24 hours) : IOWK01 (in BUFR format) and SWWE01 (CREX format). The data is collated by the Bureau into a CSV file (containing the last 24 hours of observations) which is updated every hour, at 5 minutes past the hour. This data is provided via WFS to the AODN. Note - The Maria Island buoy is currently undergoing repairs, so data is unavailable, we will update when resolved (May 2024). IMOS (some), DPE, UWA, Deakin, Flinders University + SARDI - The data is updated every hour, at 40 minutes past the hour. Pilbara Ports Authority - The data is uploaded every hour, at 30 minutes past the hour.Maintenance and Update Frequency: continualStatement: Waverider buoy data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Telecommunication System (GTS) is provided, as delivered, by the Bureau of Meteorology. In March 2018, Queensland buoys were added. In July 2020, NSW MHL buoys were added. In September 2020, Victorian buoys were added. In April 2021, IMOS buoys were added, with more added In November 2021. In November 2002 UWA, NSW Nearshore Wave Data Program, Victorian Coastal Monitoring Program and Pilbara Port's buoys were added. In August 2023 Flinders University + SARDI buoys were added. This data is collated by AODN, and made available as a timeseries. The location of the buoy in the WMO message is recorded in degrees, minutes (not seconds), hence the location is only accurate to 1-2 kilometres.Statement: UPDATE - In November 2022, existing data from MHL, BOM, DOT, DES, IMOS and Gippsland Port were reformatted to comply with a new NetCDF file standard.&rft.creator=Australian Bureau of Meteorology &rft.creator=Department of Transport (DoT), Western Australian Government &rft.creator=Department of Environment and Science (DES), Queensland Government &rft.creator=Department of Planning and Environment (DPE), New South Wales Government &rft.creator=Gippsland Ports &rft.creator=Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) &rft.creator=The University of Western Australia (UWA) &rft.creator=Deakin University &rft.creator=Pilbara Ports Authority &rft.creator=Flinders University &rft.creator=South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) &rft.date=2017&rft.coverage=114,-31 114,-30.000000000000007 115,-30.000000000000007 115,-31 114,-31&rft.coverage=115,-33 115,-31 116,-31 116,-33 115,-33&rft.coverage=129,-11 129,-10 130,-10 130,-11 129,-11&rft.coverage=141,-12.999999999999986 141,-11 142,-11 142,-12.999999999999986 141,-12.999999999999986&rft.coverage=145,-17 145,-16 146,-16 146,-17 145,-17&rft.coverage=147,-20 147,-19 148,-19 148,-20 147,-20&rft.coverage=151,-24 151,-23.000000000000014 152,-23.000000000000014 152,-24 151,-24&rft.coverage=152,-25 152,-24 153,-24 153,-25 152,-25&rft.coverage=149,-22 149,-21.000000000000014 150,-21.000000000000014 150,-22 149,-22&rft.coverage=153,-29 153,-25 154,-25 154,-27 155,-27 155,-28 154,-28 154,-29 153,-29&rft.coverage=153,-31 153,-30.000000000000007 154,-30.000000000000007 154,-31 153,-31&rft.coverage=114,-34 114,-33 115,-33 115,-34 114,-34&rft.coverage=151,-35.00000000000001 151,-33 152,-33 152,-35.00000000000001 151,-35.00000000000001&rft.coverage=150,-37.99999999999999 150,-37 151,-37 151,-37.99999999999999 150,-37.99999999999999&rft.coverage=147,-37.99999999999999 147,-37 148,-37 148,-37.99999999999999 147,-37.99999999999999&rft.coverage=121,-35.00000000000001 121,-33 122,-33 122,-35.00000000000001 121,-35.00000000000001&rft.coverage=136,-37 136,-35.999999999999986 137,-35.999999999999986 137,-37 136,-37&rft.coverage=150,-35.999999999999986 150,-35.00000000000001 151,-35.00000000000001 151,-35.999999999999986 150,-35.999999999999986&rft.coverage=116.99999999999999,-35.999999999999986 116.99999999999999,-35.00000000000001 118.00000000000001,-35.00000000000001 118.00000000000001,-35.999999999999986 116.99999999999999,-35.999999999999986&rft.coverage=145,-42.999999999999986 145,-42.00000000000001 146,-42.00000000000001 146,-42.999999999999986 145,-42.999999999999986&rft.coverage=148,-42.999999999999986 148,-42.00000000000001 149,-42.00000000000001 149,-42.999999999999986 148,-42.999999999999986&rft_rights=The location of the buoy in the WMO message is recorded in degrees, minutes (not seconds), hence the location is only accurate to 1-2 kilometres.&rft_rights=The data are near real time and have not be quality assured.&rft_rights= http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/&rft_rights=http://i.creativecommons.org/l/by/4.0/88x31.png&rft_rights=WWW:LINK-1.0-http--related&rft_rights=License Graphic&rft_rights=Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License&rft_rights=http://creativecommons.org/international/&rft_rights=WWW:LINK-1.0-http--related&rft_rights=WWW:LINK-1.0-http--related&rft_rights=License Text&rft_rights=The licence details for use of this data is free and unrestricted. Brief description

Buoys provide integral wave parameters. Pilbara Ports Authority - The data is uploaded every hour, at 30 minutes past the hour.

Lineage

Maintenance and Update Frequency: continual
Statement: Waverider buoy data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Telecommunication System (GTS) is provided, as delivered, by the Bureau of Meteorology. The location of the buoy in the WMO message is recorded in degrees, minutes (not seconds), hence the location is only accurate to 1-2 kilometres.
Statement: UPDATE - In November 2022, existing data from MHL, BOM, DOT, DES, IMOS and Gippsland Port were reformatted to comply with a new NetCDF file standard.
