Full description
Dugongs (Dugong dugon) are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened species and as other specially protected fauna in WA under Schedule 7 of the Wildlife Conservation (Specially Protected Fauna) Notice 2015). Gaps in our knowledge in Western Australia include having a good understanding of the species’ distribution, abundance and high use areas across the northwest. This 3-year project (2014-2017) integrated Indigenous knowledge and scientific observations from field surveys to better understand the distribution, abundance and movements of dugong in the Kimberley region. The data collected also provides a baseline for future monitoring and management.
This medata record relates to raw and processed aerial survey data of marine fauna collected between 21st September 2015 and 8th October 2015 in Kimberley coastal waters to the 20m bathymetry line, comprising dugongs (Dugong dugon), Australian snubfin dolphins (Orcaella heinsohni), other dolphins (bottlenose, spinners, false killer whales), humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) and large, mostly green turtles (Chelonia mydas).
The WA Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (DBCA, ex-DPaW) and CSIRO provided additional resources to extend the North Kimberley dugong aerial survey boundary westwards (Broome to just past Port Hedland) to cover the South Kimberley-Pilbara coastal regions, to close the last remaining knowledge gap of the dugong distribution and abundance in Australia. This additional survey was completed in May 2017.
Data from a trial movement study undertaken between 1-18th August 2016 also forms part of this metadata record. Five dugongs were tagged with Telonics manatee/dugong tags. GPS and ARGOS satellite detection locations and dive data were downloaded weekly from the ARGOS web site.

Statement: Standardised aerial survey was used. Survey procedures and equipment used to record data are outlined in detail by Bayliss et al. (2015, 2016) The survey was completed in Kimberley coastal waters to 20m bathymetry. Systematic east-west transects were flown in all survey blocks. The North Kimberley survey used a pre-stratified survey design and transects were either spaced 5 or 10 km apart, and provided a more efficient survey design whereby survey effort (number of transects) was greater in areas considered higher priority Hagihara et al. (2014) were used to adjust counts for the proportion of dugongs under the water’s surface that were missed by observers as affected by water depth and habitat type, in addition to adjustments for the effects of sea state and turbidity conditions as modelled by Pollock et al. (2006). Continuous observer sighting data, both on and off survey transects, are plotted across a 5-km survey grid using Kernel density extrapolation and smoothing methods in a GIS to identify “abundance hotspots”. Proportional symbols are used to represent different numbers seen, and is a rough indication of distribution and relative abundance.
Data includes 2015 and 2017 surveys.
The trial movement study was undertaken between 1-18th August 2016. The study area encompassed coastal waters between Beagle and Pender Bays on Dampier Peninsula, and Talbot Bay in Horizontal Falls Marine Park (HFMP) to the east. The area encompassed Bardi Jawi and Dambimangari sea country and their associated Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs). Four adult males were caught and tagged just north of Pender Bay in Bardi Jawi Sea Country, and one adult female was caught and tagged in Talbot Bay, HFMP-Dambimangari Sea Country. Each dugong was fitted with a Telonics manatee/dugong tag (TMT-461 Gen 4 GPS system with VHF tracking capability from aircraft or boat). GPS and ARGOS satellite detection locations (latitude & longitude; time stamped) and dive data (% time under the water and number of dives between detections’ on average every 3 hrs) were downloaded weekly from the ARGOS web site. Telonics data converter software was used on all downloaded ARGOS data to obtain GPS detections and additional ARGOS detection points. Location and trajectory data from the ARGOS web site were downloaded as Excel and Google Earth files. All detection and trajectory data were continually visualised on the ARGOS website and in Google Earth during and after field work. The movement data set (Excel spreadsheet) for each tagged dugong comprise all GPS and ARGOS detection locations (latitude and longitude; date and time stamp - EST converted to WST; and an ARGOS quality code). Google earth files of individual dugong trajectories are included. Additional Excel data files of processed data include: cumulative distance moved (km); displacement distance from point of capture (km); step distance (km); and step speed (km.hr-1).
Full details of methods are outlined in the KMRP 1.2.5 Final Report.
