Full description

The Wagga Wagga Police Station was established by 25 November 1851 when a chief constable was appointed there. (1) By 1863 the station was situated in the police administration in the Murray District and was staffed by one mounted sub-inspector, one mounted sergeant, one mounted senior constable, six mounted constables and one foot constable. (2) On 14 October 1863 the station was proclaimed as one in which the Police Act, 1838 (2 Vic. No.2) as amended was applicable. (3) The Act aimed at preventing certain nuisance behaviours and promoting good order and safety by declaring as offences obstructions in public places, and by enforcing building standards and aligning the streets. The town limits were defined and proclaimed on 14 July 1886. (4) In 1892 the Wagga Wagga Police Station was valued at £1,800 and the Police Inspector's quarters built in 1878 were valued at £1,100. There was also a Lock-up valued at £900. (4) In 2007 Wagga Wagga Police Station was located in the Wagga Wagga Local Area Command in the Southern Region. Its address in 2007 was 2-6 Sturt Street, Wagga Wagga and the Local Area Command Office was located at Level 3, 76 Morgan Street, Wagga Wagga. (6) Endnotes:
