Newly erected premises at Wagga Wagga were proclaimed to be a public gaol, prison and House of Correction on 27 May, 1862, (1) and Mr Robert John Monteith and Mrs Monteith were appointed Gaoler and Matron respectively on 28 May, 1862 (2) In his annual report for 1877 the Comptroller-General of Prisons notes that the Gaol had accommodation foe 11 separate and 30 associated prisoners and that at the end of the year the prison population was 25 - 19 males and six females. (3) Wagga Wagga Gaol was a minor gaol, used for short-sentence prisoners in the district. It ceased to be a prison by proclamation on 16 August 1909.
