Full description
This series comprises volumes containing Orders-in-Council and agreements relating to Melbourne Electricity Supply Company (VA 3966) from 1901 to 1929. The Melbourne Electric Supply Company (MES Co.) was one of the earlier electric supply companies to obtain an electrical undertaking (or authorisation to supply electricity to a given area) under the Electric Light and Power Act 1896 (No.1413).
The MES Co. (Electric Light and Traction Co.) was formed in 1901, following the purchase of the electrical undertakings of three electric supply companies in Melbourne, Geelong and Adelaide. The company ceased when it was taken over by the SEC in 1930.
These volumes are a collection of all the Orders-in-Council and agreements obtained by MES Co. Section 12 of the legislation required that before an Order-in-Council could be approved, a potential electricity supplier must notify the municipality concerned of their intention. A written agreement between the two parties was required. Unit 3 of this series consists of agreements and orders of delegation related to the sale and administration of the Geelong Tramways to the MES Co. The administration of tramways outside the Melbourne metropolitan area was governed by the Tramways Act 1915 (No.2995).
