VPRS 9861 Outward Letter Book (Board of Advice No.97)

This series comprises a volume which contains handwritten copies of correspondence sent by Board of Advice No 97. This particular Board pertained to a school district which included the Kensington (later known as Leopold) (No.1146) and Moolap (No.1911) Primary Schools.

The subject matter of these letters varies but the correspondence chiefly relates to the exercise of the Boards powers under Section 15 of the Education Act 1872. These powers include responsibility for determining and reporting on the use of school buildings on non school days/hours, the condition of school buildings and premises, school requirements and attendance of local children at the schools. Most of the letters were sent to the Education Department; all were signed by the Board Correspondent. Minutes of Board meetings have also been transferred. Refer to VPRS 9862.

The period covered by this series spans almost the entire life of this particular Board of Advice from its establishment in c.1874 to its abolition under the Education Act of 1910. Under this Act, all Boards of Advice were replaced by School Committees established within each individual school. The earliest letter in this volume dates from July 1875, however, the minutes in VPRS 9862 extend from 1874. As the front cover of this volume is missing, it is possible that copies of the earliest letters have been lost.
