VPRS 9534 Register of Boiler Inspections in Mines

Full description

Until the proclamation of the Mines (Amendment) Act (No.5396) in 1949, all boilers used in coal mines were subject to the provisions of the Boilers Inspection Act which required that boilers be registered and inspected annually by a qualified boiler inspector. However, under the provisions of the Mines Act 1928 [S.410, rule 45] boilers in mines other than coal mines were only subject to an annual inspection test and the results were to be entered in a book by the mining engineer or mine manager. This record was to be available for inspection by an inspector of mines.

This anomaly was removed with the passing of the Mines (Amendment) Act 1949 which made all boilers used in mines subject to the provisions of the Boilers Inspection Act which also governed the inspector of industrial boilers.

This series was created to document the inspection of records maintained by the mine managers in accordance with the provisions of section 410, rule 45 of the Mines Act. The particulars recorded include:

registered number of the vessel
type of boiler
horse power
material (steel)
date of issue of certificate
date of make
name of make
design details
date of internal and external inspection
name and address of owner or lessee
mine where the boiler was to be used
where boiler was inspected
signature of inspector.

The series date range has been imputed from contents in custody date range ie. 1929 to 1947.
