Full description
This series comprises capital expenditure works files relating to the construction and alteration of Technical School buildings.Files usually contain the original paper setting out the case for the new building, alteration or extension; the Education Departments requisition for works; the Public Works Departments approvals; plans; maps and the Ministers approval for expenditure. The files also contain correspondence regarding the proposal, letting of the contract and progress made.
This series represents one of a number of subsequent series to VPRS 9513 Building Files: Technical Schools. Prior to 1956 the files in VPRS 9513 contained all papers pertaining to school construction and maintenance.
From the mid 1950s items of correspondence relating to specific subjects were no longer placed on the building file. They were placed instead on files within a number of new series created to deal exclusively with particular aspects of school construction. The series included Furniture Files, Fencing Files, Subsidies Files, Temporary Premises Files, Special Grants Files, Residence Files and Land Files. Within the new series a file was created for each technical school when required.
With the exception of the capital expenditure files in this series, most of the series mentioned in the preceding paragraph were authorised for destruction by the Keeper of Public Records in 1992-93.
This series ended in 1975 - 76 when these files ceased to be created centrally by the Education Department as it transferred responsibility for the construction and maintenance of technical school buildings to its regional offices. However, the contents date range is 1949 - 1978. The pre 1956 correspondence relating to capital expenditure works which would previously have been filed on the relevant building file has been attached to files in this series and noted on building file. The post 1975-1976 correspondence relates to the correspondence exchanged with the regional offices about the school.
