VPRS 9472 Classified Registration Cards for General Correspondence Files

Full description

This series appears to have served two recordkeeping functions in relation to VPRS 6008 General Correspondence Files for the period October 1958 to May 1987. Firstly, the series provided a means of classifying files according to a predefined scheme. This meant that when an item of correspondence was received the Records Branch would have been able to determine whether to attach it to an existing file. If there were no existing file relating to a letters subject, a new file would have been raised and an entry made in this series. The subject headings used in this series were recorded in VPRS 14726 List of Classified Indexable Headings.

Secondly, by indexing files by subject this series became another way of retrieving files.
