VPRS 8920 Nominal Card Index to Personnel Registry Subject Files

Full description

This series was presumably created to provide quick access to files in VPRS 8916 by a subject which was the name of an organisation, office or individual. The index is not comprehensive, that is, it will not provide access to every file in VPRS 8916. The criteria for an entry to be made in this index is not clear. Some authorised subjects listed in VPRS 8919 make reference to this index which would indicate that some subjects were routinely indexed here.

This index consists of orange index cards separated into sections by tagged divider cards arranged alphabetically. Within each section index cards are arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent. Information recorded on the index cards includes the name of the correspondent, date of the files creation, precis of the file subject, and file number.

The index was presumably created for the same period as VPRS 8916 was created, that is, 1978 to 1991. Some cards show file creation dates for files at least as early as 1971 but with corresponding file numbers dated from 1978. This reflects the fact that, with the introduction of the annual single number filing system in VPRS 8916, files from the previous series (VPRS 8892) were top-numbered into the new system.

This series was created as part of the recordkeeping system which included the files (VPRS 8916), a file register (VPRS 8917), indexes to letters/files location (VPRS 8921), by subject (VPRS 8918 and VPRS 8919) by classified positions (VPRS 8922) and by Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Commission case number (VPRS 8923).
