Full description
Under the provisions of the Sunday Entertainment Act 1967 (No.7634) which came into operation on 1 March 1967, a permit was required to be obtained (for a fee) for any form of Sunday entertainment for which admission was charged, unless excluded by an Act. The permits were issued by the Chief Secretary's Department (VA 475) during the period 1967-1978 and the Department of Labour and Industry (VA 1027) 1978-1985, the Department of Employment and Industrial Affairs (VA 2777) 1985-1986 Department of Labour II (VA 2777) 1986-1992 and from 1992-1994 by the Department of Business and Employment (VA 3096).
This series was created to record details of permits issued for conducting entertainment on a Sunday.
The information recorded includes :
Date the permit was issued
Name and address of the organisation
Permit Number
Date posted
Payment record, amount paid or refunded, cheque number etc.
Files containing completed Permit Application forms and signed approvals have been identified as temporary in the Department of Labour Schedule, PRO 91/06. Copies of permits issued during the period 1968-1985 were authorised for destruction by the Keeper of Public Records in 1992.
The commencement date of the series has been imputed from the contents in custody date range. It is possible that similar records were created by the Chief Secretary's Department prior to 1978, however, they were not located at the time of the transfer of this series. The series ended in 1994 with the repeal of the Sunday Entertainment Act 1967. It is no longer necessary to apply for a Sunday Entertainment Permit.
