The units were removed when the information from these cards were transcribed into a online searchable index which was placed on the PROV website. In 2010 the cards were removed from these cabinets. Units in this series originally represented a drawer of cards within the cabinets. This series is a location card index and was created simultaneously with the Public Building Files (VPRS 7882/P1) and the numerical card index (VPRS 8041/P1) which were created around the year 1924. The series continued to develop till 1988 when the function relating to public building (P.B.) regulation was transferred to the Department of Planning and Environment. It forms part of the overall public building recordkeeping system which includes the numerical card index (VPRS 8041/P1) and general indexes (VPRS 8043/P1).
