Full description

Licensing Registers for country areas appear not to have commenced until 1917. Some licensing entries for country areas will be found in VPRS 7601, Metropolitan Registers.

Petitions and Proclamations

Volume 4 (1917-1952) is a listing of country petitions/proclamations, as country areas applied for liquor licenses. The petition was resolved by voting amongst the townspeople. The majority of petitions were granted.

Country Licensing Registers

These follow the same format as metropolitan registers. Applicants were issued with a number beginning at one, and then were processed accordingly. When re-applying for a licence renewal, they do not necessarily have the same number. A fee was paid.

The early registers record quarterly and annual sittings for hearings. These were for Liquor and Auctioneer Licenses. Other licenses were heard on a more regular basis and they were grouped accordingly to licence, for example: Carriers were heard together.

If a hearing was adjourned, a date was included for the next hearing. Additional Volume references: 2 April 1917, 139

Types Of Licenses Granted And How Processed

Applications were made for: New, Renewal, Transfer, Extension, Alteration and Temporary Licenses.

New Licenses - These are issued once only.

Annual Licenses - One sitting was held for granting licence renewals. Some additional licenses were granted after annual sittings.

General Licenses - These apply to transfer of shares, duplicate licence, varying conditions set on a licence, transfer relating to change of Directors, Appointment of Nominees, application for extended hours permits (Sunday) and revocations.

Extensions - Permits an extension to the time liquor can be served, often for a special occasion: wedding, 21st birthday.

Alterations - Records licensed premises undergoing alterations to their buildings, lists date of commencement, completion and total cost.

Temporary Licenses - These are issued for irregular events such as Race Meetings.
