VPRS 7563 Register of Boarded Out Patients

Full description

This series records the registration details of those patients who were boarded out from the Hospitals for the Insane to persons and to hospitals. This system of "boarding out" was an attempt to reduce patient numbers in the large Hospitals. It was also generally believed that living in a "community" environment would be beneficial to the health of the patient. Guardians were remunerated by the Government. Regulations relating to "boarded-out" patients were published in the Government Gazette.

The volumes are arranged chronologically. The contents are arranged by hospital name. Under each hospital there are separate lists for those patients boarded out with persons and those patients sent to hospitals. Patients are then listed chronologically by date of the commencement of the "boarding-out".

Details recorded include:

- date boarded out,
- name of patient,
- rate per week,
- to whom boarded out,
- returned date.
