The registers in this series record the payment charged for the production of assay reports, as located in the related series VPRS 19143 Assay Reports. 

The registers record the assay report number, address and/or name of the person who sent the sample, amount charged and date. This information may be cross-referenced with the equivalent assay report number in the reports for the same year. Some entries list a second number along with the date, which appears to be a receipt number for payment made. Not every assay report is listed in the registers, with apparent gaps in the numbering sequence.

Assay sample testing was the responsibility of the Geological Survey of Victoria (VA 4118) and was undertaken by different public bodies over time. Reports for this series were completed by the State Laboratories.
