VPRS 6812 Subject and Name Index Cards to Correspondence Files

This series comprises an Index of names and subjects providing access to the General Correspondence Files (VPRS 7068) of the Mines Department (VA 612). This Index does not provide access to files relating to individual leases and licences.

The files in VPRS 7068 were numbered in a single number sequence. The registration of files commenced in April 1952 and involved the top-numbering of previous correspondence which appears to have been arranged by subject. There is no register of files extant.

The cards in this index comprise subject and name entries. Mostly there is only one entry per card. Files for some subjects are identified by a primary and secondary number and these secondary numbers are all listed on the card related to the relevant primary number. Occasionally, details of correspondence attached to the files are recorded on the cards.

The index cards in this series are arranged in alphabetical order within three sequences of cards each arranged in an alphabetical sequence. It is assumed that cards were removed from the main sequence whenever the corresponding files were removed and transferred to storage. Over time the single sequence of cards became disaggregated. It is therefore unclear whether these sequences constitutes the complete index to every file created by the agency in VPRS 7068.

This series was originally identified, titled and documented by a service provider. An evaluation of the supplied documentation in 2025 established the cards received as VPRS 7167 was part of this series. Accordingly, VPRS 7167 was cancelled and its contents were moved into this series.A minor change was also made to the series title.
