Full description

The Factories and Shops (Long Service Leave) Act 1953 and the Labour and Industry Act 1953 provided workers with certain minimum entitlements to long service leave. The Industrial Appeals Court was empowered under the legislation to exempt employers from the provisions of the Acts with respect to all or any class of their workers provided that the terms of employment of the workers was not less favourable than the entitlements provided for in the Acts. The Court could also revoke such exemptions.

The files in this series relate to applications from employers for exemptions from the long service leave provisions of the Factories and Shops (Long Service Leave) Act 1953 and the Labour and Industry Act 1953. The files were probably maintained by the Department of Labour. Because of the existence of registered case files of the Industrial Appeals Court relating to some of the same cases it is not certain why these files were maintained.
