In 1901, the first opening of the Commonwealth Parliament by the Duke of York took place at the Exhibition Buildings. The new Parliament was to subsequently meet at the Victorian Parliament House until the move to Canberra in 1927.This series consists of the official Minutes of VA 4186 Cabinet Sub-Committee for Commonwealth Celebrations. These Minutes record the process of making all the arrangements for the celebrations sponsored by the State Government to mark the occasion as well as the arrangements for the opening itself and for the Royal Visit. These arrangements also involved gaining the cooperation of other bodies such as the Melbourne City Council, the formation of sub-committees to take responsibility for specific tasks and events and the oversight of expenditure.
