In 1901, the first opening of the Commonwealth Parliament by the Duke of York took place at the Exhibition Buildings. The new Parliament was to subsequently meet at the Victorian Parliament House until the move to Canberra in 1927.

This series consists of the Register of Accounts of VA 4186 Cabinet Sub-Committee for Commonwealth Celebrations. Each account for goods and services required for the staging of special events, decorating the city and entertaining guests was entered in this Register. Details given are

the number of the account,

the type of account (often listed as Military for the support and entertainment of visiting contingents or Charitable for the supply of a special meal for the poor)

the name of the claimant (an individual or business firm)

a description of the claim giving the details of the goods or services provided,

the amount,

to whom the account was forwarded (usually the Public Works Department as being responsible for all works),

the date of payment of the account

and remarks to do with returned payments or notes of Public Works Department contract numbers.
