Unit 1 refers to Castlemaine Gaol (1881-1890). Unit 2 refers to Maryborough Gaol (1887-1902). In relation to unit 2, there is further information covering the period 1934-1935. The latter information includes a daily precis from the Officer in Charge about activity at the gaol. It could be assumed that the latter information also related to Maryborough Gaol. However on 19 June 1902 Maryborough Gaol was declared by the Governor of Victoria to no longer be a public gaol. From that date the buildings premises were declared to be a Police Gaol. The origin of Unit 3 is not immediately obvious from the record but is likely to be Castlemaine Gaol (1897-1907).
