Full description

During the course of a civil action, rules nisi may be made. These are any decree or order etc which is made but does not take immediate effect. The defendant must present before the judge who issued the rule on a set date to show cause why the rule issued should not be enforced (or made absolute). On this date, the judge will decide whether to enforce or discharge the rule.

This series lists all the civil cases in which a nisi rule was issued. It also lists rules not applied for during a civil case. Documentation of those relating to a civil case may be found in VPRS 5377 Civil Briefs. Details given in this series are the number, the date of the motion, when the rule was issued and when it was returnable, the number of the action (the case number), the names of the plaintiff and defendant and of their attorneys, the nature of the rule, the judgment delivered and the date if postponed.
