Full description

This series was used to record details of judgment payments which a Court of Petty Sessions permitted to be made in instalments. This procedure was introduced through Section 110 of the Justices of the Peace Act 1887 (No. 953) and was continued through successive Justices Acts.

The Rules issued to support the 1887 and 1890 Acts contained the following requirement: "Every clerk of petty sessions shall keep an Instalment Book in the form prescribed in the Schedule hereto, in which he shall enter the register [case] number and date of every order or conviction by which a sum of money is adjudged to be paid by instalments, the name of the person against whom the order or conviction is made, the manner of payment ordered and each instalment as soon as it is paid."
