VPRS 4389 Register of Salaries, Wages and Allowances, Dredging Operations (Ports and Harbours Branch)

This series was created to record the payment of salaries, wages and allowances to some staff engaged in dredging and snagging operations within the Ports and Harbours Branch of the Public Works Department (VA 669). Although the Public Works Department had been responsible for dredging operations outside the jurisdiction of the Melbourne Harbour Trust Commissioners prior to 1900, it was not until about circa 1910 or 1911 that these responsibilities had been incorporated into the Ports and Harbours Branch. (The Ports and Harbours Branch had prior to 1900 been part of the Department of Trade and Customs VA 606.)

Entries in this register record the name and position held by employees, work location, period of employment, authorised rate of pay and the amounts paid for each month within a given financial year. Amendments to pay rates are also incorporated.

The register appears to cover all types of employees including administrative and dredging staff as well as permanent, temporary and casual employees. Details of the employment record for permanent employees can be located within VPRS 10979 Summary Record of Employees (Ports and Harbours Branch).
