The Public Works Department (VA 669) had wide-ranging responsibilities for all public works and buildings, including construction, maintenance and fitting out of these buildings. Other major responsibilities included roads and bridges, ports and harbours, local government and water supply.This series contains sequentially numbered memoranda from the Inspector-General of Works which were circulated around the professional officers of the Department. Each officer initialled and dated the memorandum to indicate that it had been noted. These memoranda dealt with procedures to be followed by officers within the office and in the development of specifications and tenders and during the course of supervising and administering contracts.
