VPRS 4371 Photographs of Walhalla [Walhalla Gold Mining Company]

Full description

This series consists of photographs of Walhalla. Images depict the township, goldmine, miners (mostly showing unidentified miners at work) and the Harvest Home at the Methodist Church.

This archival series was created by PROV in 1982 when these photographs were found in the PROV library. It is unclear how these records were originally transferred to archival custody. One possibility is that these were received as part of a transfer from the Sale Courthouse in 1972 that included records of the former Walhalla Gold Mining Company. Another possibility is the records were donated by a private individual.

Most of the photographs are not dated and do not contain a specific description of the image. Those that are dated span the period 1884 - 1913. Most of the images in this period were not actually created in this period given the composition of the actual print. Additionally some prints have markings on their reverse indicating these were created for inclusion in an unknown publication. The prints that may have been created in the 1884 - 1913 period contain either markings on the front or glue on the reverse suggesting these were removed from a volume such as a photograph album.

PROV has added several items to this series, including negatives of a handful of images and a copy of reproduction of the Walhalla Chronicle dated 30 September 1871, produced by PROV in 1975 that used one of the images in the series.
